The "Ugly" Masterpiece: 2666

I don't think I have read a book that caused me this much bewilderment since I tried to read James Joyce's Ulysses. That doesn't mean that I didn't like it. By the time I reached page 800, I was definitely aware that I had been reading a book that will be around for a long time. It2 finally comes together in the last 100 pages. I didn't cheat either, although I was tempted. In fact, I often read sections over and over, looking for the unifying cord that held it all together. I am even considering starting a book club simply so that I can hear other people react to 2666.
