A Class in Appalachian Literature.

Jack, my jack russell looked a bit take aback when I told him that I was going to teach a twelve-week course in Appalachian Literature at the new Jackson County Senior Citizen Center. It could fall through, of course, but right now, I've been told to prepare my lectures and get ready to saddle up. I will start in April. Jack will sleep in the car while I am doing this.

  1. I could read Sharyn McCrumb's "She Walks These Hills" a thousand times. Be careful out there.

  2. Yeah, Sharyn is on the list. So is Caroline Miller who people rarely read anymore, but she won the Pulitzer for "Lamb in His Bosom" that still astonishes me.

  3. Bobbi Ann Mason (I'm probably misspelling both first names there) rocks too.

  4. Yeah, she did "Feather Crowns" which I really liked (and I've been researching their exisence (heavenly or feather crowns) in this region. Lots of mountain families have one hidden in the back of grandma's dresser. You ever ead any Pinckney (sp) Benedict or Gurney Norman?

  5. I'm sure you'll enjoy this a great deal. Will the students also be writing?

  6. Wish I had time to take this. When I officially become a "senior" I plan to spend time on things like this rather than a "job of work."

  7. I think you are officially a "senior" when you are 60 now. Yes, my students will, hopefully, be writing, but right now, they will be taking notes and discussing the merits of Lee Smith, William Gay,
    Harriet Arnow and Gurney Norman.

  8. This sounds wonderful! I turned sixty last August so I think I qualify as a senior. I am also doing much better with my Parkinson's and getting around more (and better) since my brain surgery in a gene implant research study at Wake Forest last October. I am feeling more confident, and doing more, and I am really excited about the prospect of taking this course should it materialize! I am so glad you are posting again.
