  1. I'm very intrigued by your writing and plays. I wish I lived close enough to enjoy this show. I'm currently living in Northwest Alabama.

Where can I purchase scripts by you? I have been searching for a good Appalachian one woman show. I am 29 years old and fancy myself an actress. I've been in numerous plays and have the desire to do a one woman show myself. I've searched high and low for a good script and story that reaches into my heritage. I'd so love to see the stories of Birdell and Nance Dude.

  2. Why don't you come to one or both of these performances, or failing that, let me send you a script (or some scripts)? I am currently looking for an actress to do my new play, but it might not be your "cup of tea." It is called "Signs and Wonders" and many actresses would steer clear of it.
I would be glad to send you scripts for "Nance Dude,""Birdell," and "The Bright Forever"..all of which are one-woman shows. My plays have never been published except by me and the original collection is long gone.

  3. I would love to come to the shows but I am currently living in Northwest Alabama. My husband attends the Memphis College of Art and we live in Memphis Monday-Friday. It would be impossible for me to attend, though if I were in the North Carolina area, I would certainly come.

I would love to read your scripts and hear more about Signs and Wonders. It's a dream of mine to do a one woman show. The closest I got was at The Breaks Interstate Park in Virginia doing Always Patsy Cline, I played Louise and narrated the 2 hour long show. I have been in several plays in the Northwest Alabama area, mostly with the Bay Tree Council for the Performing Arts in Red Bay Alabama. You can find them online under that name. I've played a range of characters from elderly women in the plays "Moon Over Buffalo" and "Leading Ladies" to a British woman in "The Odd Couple" a mother in "Cheaper by the Dozen" and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." In other words I don't mind playing older or odd characters.

I would be willing to pay you a royalty fee to do one of your shows if I read the script, felt I could do it, and found a venue. "Signs and Wonders" sounds intriguing, I'd love to hear more about it.

I knew that I recalled something about your name. I found your website some time last year. I bookmarked it on my computer because I was very interested in your writing, storytelling and art. I googled your name and up came quite a lot about your work. I watched several videos on YouTube, which I loved. The "Nance" piece is very moving. My husband is an artist that paints about home in the Appalachian Mountains. His website is www.shawnwallaceart.com You might find his work interesting.

I love home and the culture I was raised in, one of these days I hope to get a few books of my own out of this head of mine. I write everyday and hope to have something worth publishing at the end of the year.

Thank you for responding to me so quickly. I look forward to reading your scripts.

  7. That is really a fine looking poster! I noticed there were people wanting scripts-- I would encourage them to get a copy of your DVDs and watch how they are performed too. Soon you'll have a copy of "Birdell" in DVD format too...

  8. Yes, that is true. "Birdell" will be filmed during the March 12th performance, thanks to the services of Mr. Brewin and friends.

  9. Mr. Carden,

I just got home from Memphis this evening and found the scripts in the box. I didn't read another bit of mail until I had finished all of Bridell, which I loved. I laughed and I cried and I read it aloud as if I were performing the piece. It's a fine piece of work and absolutely perfect. It's just as if I knew Birdell. I grew up about an hour from Johnson City Tennessee, closer to Kentucky. I was also raised by my grandparents.

I also enjoyed the brochure you enclosed. Congratulations on all of your accomplishments. What do I owe you for the scripts? You can disclose that in an email to me if you want dorawallace@gmail.com I want to keep them, if that's okay? I'm 100% certain I want to do the Birdell piece at some point. I can of course talk with you more about that later once my husband has finished up with school in May. This summer or fall will be free for me and I'd really love to perform one of your pieces then if I can work it out.

Thank you for sending the things to me so quickly. I really appreciate it and wish you the very best of luck in all you do. I'll be in touch.

  10. I printed those scripts at the local newspaper office and I sell them for $5 each. If you get interested in Birdell you may want to collect some information on Hazel Creek. I used to put up a lobby display in the real Hazel Creek along with some material on TVA and Fontana. We did "Birdell" last night at Western Carolina University and I went on stage with the actress who played Birdell after the performance and answered questions from the audience. It is amazing how many people in an audience in this region (and yours) have vivid memories and opinions about those events. If you have the opportunity to do so, look for Duane Oliver's books on Hazel Creek as well as a wonderful history of this event called "The Wild East."

  11. I'm working on a literary dissertation project about displaced peoples from the GSMNP. A friend of mine just informed me of your play. Can I order the script of "Birdell"?
