TELLING STORIES TO THE COWEE GEMS

This was an unusual group. I was invited to a lunch in the Cowee community of Macon County by a group called the Cowee Gems. It turned out that they were all from the section of Cowee where my grndfather originated and wanted me to tell stories about my visits to my great-grandmother, who was called "Aunt Nancy" Carden. I told stories of snow storms, escaped convicts, ginsang hunters and old black men who were former slaves. One venerable lady told me that she was my babysitter in 1940.
